ClubCorp Regional Facilities Mobilize To Help Disaster Victims

Clubs are usually vehicles for charities. You want to raise money for the local animal shelter, hold a golf outing and a silent auction, sell some mulligans and tee signs, solicit business sponsorships, get some prizes donated and you’re off and running. Clubs participate, not as donors but as facilitators.

But occasionally, a need emerges that is so great, club operators rally to answer the call. Such was the case this past spring when the town of Newnan, Georgia, with a population just north of 40,000, was struck by an EF4 tornado, the strongest tornado to hit the state of Georgia in more than a decade and one of only 10 storms of that magnitude in the state since 1950. Making matters worse, the strongest tornado struck the center of downtown, filled with 100-year-old single-family homes.

A total of six people died throughout the Southeast, one in the town of Newnan. But the devastation was massive. Power was out for more than a week. Families were without food, water or shelter for much longer.

ClubCorp owns six clubs in the immediate area. Managers there mobilized immediately. Notices were sent to members and a food and water drive stood up within hours. While executives in Dallas were not involved, they did support their local teams as thousands of bottles of water and cans of food were gathered by and from the clubs and distributed through the Red Cross and local churches.

“It was a grassroots effort,” said Joe Dente of ClubCorp. “People saw a need and mobilized immediately. It is a terrible tragedy but a proud time to be a part of these clubs and this community.”
